See the full story · 1 sourcesA former Texas A&M quarterback has reportedly been named Georgia Southern 's QB1 for the 2026 season, marking his fourth collegiate start.
According to college football insider Pete Thamel, Max Johnson will be the Eagles' starting signal-caller and will debut against Charleston Southern in the season opener. Johnson transferred to North Carolina from Texas A&M before the 2024 season, but a fractured femur sidelined him for much of his stint with the Tar Heels. He threw for just 432 yards and two touchdowns for Bill Belichick's squad last year.
Despite North Carolina's recent struggles, their quarterback room is solid and features Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. and Miles O'Neill, a former Aggie gunslinger. Those factors ultimately led Johnson to search for another shot in his seventh season of college football, which he found at Georgia Southern.

Johnson transferred to Texas A&M from LSU in 2022 and was part of a three-quarterback controversy in College Station under former head coach Jimbo Fisher. Haynes King, who became an elite playmaker at Georgia Tech the last two seasons, and Houston quarterback Connor Weigman were both part of Fisher's quarterback room four years ago. Johnson doubled his starts in 2023, throwing for 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns, in both his and Fisher's last year in Aggieland.
He made just one appearance with the Tar Heels in 2024 before the femur injury, which caused him to miss 19 games over the last two years. Johnson has posted 6,355 passing yards, 49 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his collegiate career.
