Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan caught up with receiver Luke McCaffrey on Friday. McCaffrey, who was drafted No, 100 overall in the 2024 draft, has, in his two seasons, only caught 29 receptions thus far. So yes, in one sense McCaffrey has underdelivered. On the other hand, McCaffrey was only available in nine games last season before his season was ended due to injury.
One might think McCaffrey could be apprehensive with the Commanders signing Diggs. But not so. McCaffrey was second in the NFL in kickoff return average last year through nine games. He also is confident he will still be on this 53-man roster in September. Thus, McCaffrey is looking at this positively.

— 106.7 The Fan (@1067theFan) August 7, 2026 "I feel good; it's (training camp) been a lot of fun," expressed the third-year receiver. "Training camps are always fun to refine the fundamentals, master the offense, and then compete."
Paulsen noted that the Commanders' new offensive coordinator, David Blough, will naturally structure the offense the way he likes it run. So McCaffrey has been busy also learning some new offensive philosophy. "I've had a lot of fun learning it, and now a lot of fun competing with it. We have a great room with a lot of guys who can do a lot of good things. We are having fun out here."
Paulsen then asked what it is like to compete with a guy like Diggs who has such a resume. "It's awesome. I've watched so much of his tape. Now to be able to see it in person firsthand, and learn from him, and have another weapon in the room is awesome."
Does McCaffrey feel threatened? "I think every player wants to be on the best possible team. Any time you can add a weapon, it is good. Adding another one is only going to help the team."
McCaffrey certainly said all of the right things. After all, how masculine is it to whine about added competition? If Diggs can remain healthy in 2026, it could do much to help the Commanders' offense. Even more, McCaffrey sounds like he could help himself in 2026 and beyond.
