Chargers GM Drops Three-Word Message on Pending Roster Moves
The Los Angeles Chargers are getting set for an exciting NFL preseason. And while not everyone will watch this year's set of exhibition games, the three-game slate could generate more buzz than usual from Chargers fans.
There's plenty to watch for this offseason, but one position in particular will command plenty of attention. It's the one position that seemed to bring a premature end to last season on the field: The offensive line.
Los Angeles is in a good place at tackle with the return of a healthy Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater. The Chargers could not ask for a better tackle duo. The questions come on the interior.
The Chargers are aware of the perceived deficiencies at guard. It appears they play to address those concerns.
ESPN NFL analyst Kris Rhim recorded a three-word message from Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz on the team's upcoming roster moves: "We're not done."
Rhim posted the full quote by Hortiz on social media. Hortiz said of potential additions up front, “We’re not done on the offensive line, I can promise you that.”
So, there you have it. There will be moves made on the offensive line. But what does that mean?
Josh Davis of Clutch Points added his two cents on the statement by the Chargers' general manager. Here's some of what he had to say on the strong quote.
"Hortiz’s approach reflects a clear sense of urgency. Injuries to key tackles and inconsistent guard play contributed to significant struggles last season, leaving Herbert exposed to frequent pressure.
As a result, the Chargers’ draft strategy appears increasingly focused. The team is anticipated to target linemen who fit a movement-based system within the evolving offensive scheme.
Adding depth through both free agency and the draft provides flexibility. It allows the Chargers to avoid reaching for a single need while building a more balanced unit."

So, what does Hortiz mean?
Hortiz indicates that the Chargers are not done making moves. The natural conclusion for those outside the organization is that Hortiz will sign someone else. Maybe he will. Maybe he won't. There's no guarantee that Chargers fans will be excited about the addition.
Whether or not the Chargers sign someone else or simply make roster cuts is still to be seen. Even so, there is talent in house to make a run.
Still, Chargers fans don't just want "good enough." They want to be sure the team is fully stocked with reliable blockers and quality depth to protect starting quarterback Justin Herbert.
We'll see what changes Hortiz is talking about as the preseason anticipation intensifies.
