The first home game of the Alex Golesh era of Auburn football is set for Saturday, Sept. 12, when the Tigers host Southern Miss at Jordan-Hare Stadium for an evening kickoff time.
When teams from the FCS level, or the Group of Five, visit an SEC stadium for a game, there is usually money involved. This will be the case this season when Southern Miss visits Auburn in September, as the Golden Eagles are lined up to receive a hefty payday.
According to a report by Davis Wilson of the Hattiesburg American , Auburn is set to pay Southern Miss $1.85 million in exchange for a game played inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. According to the report, it will be Southern Miss' highest payday this season, second to their contract with Tulane, where the Green Wave will pay Southern Miss $75,000 to play at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans on Sept. 26.
This season's matchup between Auburn and Southern Miss will mark the 24th time these two programs have met on the gridiron . Auburn leads the all-time series, 18-5, and has won four-straight games in the series. NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre led Southern Miss to a 13-12 win over the Tigers in 1990 in Jordan-Hare Stadium, and the Golden Eagles beat Auburn again by one point in 1991, but have dropped the four following games played in 1992, 1993, 2008, and 2018.
