Chicago Sky star DiJonai Carrington was ejected from Saturday night’s game against the Indiana Fever after she was issued a flagrant 2 for a hard foul on Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has recently made headlines for speaking out against trans athletes.
Following her ejection, Carrington caused quite a stir when she posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on social media immediately after her ejection. Now, Carrington is finally speaking out on the post.
Carrington Ejected, Posts “WHITE PRIVILEGE”
During the first quarter of Saturday night’s game, Carrington struck Cunningham hard in the face as she was going up for a fast break layup, sending her crashing to the hardwood. In the aftermath of the play, the two players had to be separated after Cunningham took exception to the hard foul.
Following a video review, the foul was upgraded to a flagrant 2, and Carrington was ejected from the game.
It did not take long for Carrington to add fuel to an already tense situation as she took to Threads from the locker room and posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE,” tagging the Indiana Fever’s official account.
After the game, Cunningham addressed Carrington’s comments, saying that her ejection had “nothing to do with race.”
“I think the league is taking care of that,” she said. “This has nothing to do with race. Last year, I did the same thing and I got kicked out. And I deserved to be kicked out. There’s no reason even to play that card.”
Emmanuel Acho Criticizes Carrington
Carrington obviously received a lot of criticism for her comments, but one of the voices calling her out was former ESPN star Emmanuel Acho. In a video shared to social media,
“If we are paying attention to what DiJonai Carrington did to Sophie Cunningham, it was not a race-based decision. And to call that a white privilege-based foul is to completely undermine the term of ‘white privilege’ and to also completely ignore the rules of basketball,” Acho said.
“To me, it was just very ignorant and very asinine for DiJonai Carrington to suggest that that call was based on white privilege,” he continued.
Carrington Breaks Her Silence
Carrington had not spoken about her ejection or her social media post until Monday afternoon when she chose to clap back at Acho.
In a post on X, Carrington responded to Acho as she told him to “try exercising your critical thinking skills” and pointed out that she never once claimed that she was assessed a foul because of white privilege.
“I’ve never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption). Try exercising your critical thinking skills, I know you studied psych. Furthermore, I’m the LAST thing from ignorant or asinine when it comes to speaking on ‘white privilege’, do ya research on that one. I actually went to school, one of the top universities might I add, to educate myself on this exact subject. I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it,” she wrote in a post on X .
Carrington has not yet elaborated on what she meant by her controversial social media post.
