Domenicali sets out plans for Formula 1's next rule set: 'There are two options
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has revealed that two options are currently being considered for the sport's next set of regulations.
Starting this year, Formula 1 is racing under a completely new set of technical regulations, which are set to remain in place for five years. The biggest change came from the power units, with the electrical component initially matching the output of the internal combustion engine before its contribution is gradually reduced over the following two seasons.
Speaking to international media, including GPblog , Domenicali explained that Formula 1 is currently considering two possible paths for the next regulatory cycle. One would see the current rules run their full course until 2031, allowing the FIA to introduce an entirely new set of regulations at the end of that period if it chooses.
He also outlined the alternative scenario, which would involve bringing forward any regulatory changes if all key stakeholders reach an agreement. According to Domenicali, such a move would require the appropriate governance structure and the backing of both the teams and manufacturers before any decision could be taken.
"There are two options. If we wait until the end of the cycle to be finished, in 2031, there's nothing that prevents the FIA to present a totally different regulation. And of course, if the teams want to be part of it, they can, otherwise not. I'm exaggerating, but you understand the principle.

"If there is a consensus on what we are doing to anticipate it, there is the need to find the governance in place. The teams, with the manufacturers, and therefore that's another opportunity that I think will be on the table between all of us before the end of the season."
Domenicali added that discussions are progressing well despite the different interests involved. While acknowledging that each party is naturally pushing its own position, he expressed confidence that an agreement on the future direction of Formula 1 would be reached before the end of the year.
"I think there are a lot of good talks going ahead now. There are, as you can imagine, a lot of different angles that everyone is pushing for different reasons, but by the end of the year we're going to be in a position to have the right package for the future."

Domenicali has confirmed that next year's calendar is currently being prepared as planned, although contingency measures are already in place should the conflict in the Middle East continue. While the sport expects to unveil its 2027 schedule later this year, he stressed there is still plenty of time to make adjustments if necessary.
He explained that a final decision will not be required until the end of the year, leaving Formula 1 with enough flexibility to react to any developments. He added that the situation extends far beyond motorsport, acknowledging that any continued instability in the region would represent a far more serious issue than the championship calendar itself.
Despite the uncertainty, Domenicali insisted Formula 1 has multiple alternatives ready to ensure the season can go ahead as planned. Whatever happens, the championship remains committed to staging a 24-round calendar next year, with different solutions already prepared if changes become necessary.
