If the quickest way for him to get back into the fold means moving to the bullpen, that's a conversation he's willing to have.
Crochet, who has suffered several setbacks after initially being placed on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation on April 29, sees that time is clearly running out for him to build back up as a starting pitcher and has started to entertain the idea of moonlighting as a relief pitcher .
"There's no ego about it. It's something I've done before," Crochet said on Audacy's "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast on Wednesday. "... Any way possible I can help this team achieve the goal we set out in spring training, the goal every team sets out to achieve. If I can help us achieve it, I don't really care what the role is."
Crochet has done something similar in the past, having pitched in small bursts out of the bullpen in 2023 following his return from Tommy John surgery in 2022.
The Red Sox have finally started to see their ace get back into the swing of things, as he began a flat-ground throwing program for the first time in three months on Tuesday.
“He’s been down a while, so we’re in the very infant stages of like very short (throws),” Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said. “But he did have a ball in his hand and was throwing it, which is good. So he’s probably going to be in that really short range throwing right now and then we’ll move him along as he goes.”
It's safe to say the organization doesn't want to count its chickens before they hatch, but preparations could soon start to begin for a potential return.
