The Boston Red Sox received an encouraging update after one of their hottest hitters made an unexpected exit Wednesday night. Willson Contreras was removed from Boston’s game against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park, immediately creating concern about a potential injury. The Red Sox later announced that Contreras exited because of an illness, according to Boston Sports Gordo.
No additional details were immediately available, but the initial explanation should allow Red Sox fans to breathe easier. Contreras apparently did not aggravate an existing injury or suffer a new physical issue during the game.

Contreras Continued Hot Stretch Before Exit

His departure came one day after he recorded two hits, two RBIs and two runs during Boston’s 14-2 victory over Chicago.
Contreras entered Wednesday batting .286 with 23 home runs, 69 RBIs and a .931 OPS across 104 games this season. He had also collected five hits, three walks, one home run and three RBIs over his previous five games.
Boston could not afford to lose that kind of production for an extended period, especially with the club playing its best baseball of the season.
The Red Sox entered Wednesday riding a six-game winning streak. They swept the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road before returning to Fenway Park and overwhelming the White Sox in the series opener.

Red Sox Avoid Another Major Injury Scare
Contreras’ exit was particularly unsettling because he recently dealt with another health scare. He was struck in the helmet by a fastball during Boston’s July 31 game against the Dodgers and exited the contest. Contreras returned to the lineup Sunday and helped the Red Sox complete their sweep in Los Angeles.
Wednesday’s departure had no connection to that incident based on the team’s initial announcement. Boston already has several important players on the injured list, including Adley Rutschman, Trevor Story, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Kutter Crawford. Losing Contreras would have delivered another significant blow to a team trying to climb the American League East standings and secure a postseason spot.
For now, the update is relatively positive. Illness can still affect Contreras’ availability for Thursday’s series finale, but the Red Sox appear to have avoided the more troubling possibility of another injury.
