Another impeachable offense’: Donald Trump sparks outrage with ‘pathetic’ LeBron James comments
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect
One of the most widely debated topics in sports is the argument over whether LeBron James or Michael Jordan deserves the title of the greatest basketball player of all time. Now, President Donald Trump has weighed in on the conversation, but he’s also sparked widespread outrage for how he discussed James.
While speaking at a recent press conference, Trump was asked where he stood in the Jordan-versus-LeBron debate following LeBron’s decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. Trump went with Jordan, but in his explanation as to why, he baselessly suggested that James could be “a racist.”
On Thursday, LeBron officially revealed that he will return for another NBA season and plans to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. The move will make Philadelphia the fourth franchise of his career, following stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers.
“I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give,” LeBron wrote in a statement on X.
“The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out. This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?” he continued. “I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winnin another championship.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time. Thank you LA. Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always home!”
‘Maybe he’s a racist’
During a press conference earlier this week, Trump was asked for his thoughts on the long-running Michael Jordan versus LeBron James debate in light of LeBron’s latest career move. Trump made it clear that he sided with Jordan, claiming that LeBron could be “a racist,” presumably because he is not personal friends with Trump.
“Well, Michael Jordan is a guy that’s a friend of mine. He’s a really good guy,” Trump said during a press conference. “And I think LeBron… Maybe he’s a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way.”
Trump did not provide any explanation or evidence for why he suggested James could be a racist.
‘What a weirdo’
Needless to say, Trump’s comments about James led to a lot of reactions on social media as fans expressed their outrage.
“What a weirdo,” longtime sports analyst Jamele Hill wrote in a post on X .
“Show me the presidents a man opposes, and I’ll show you his character. LeBron’s opposition reveals far more than any championship ring ever could,” wrote ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel in a post .
“Healthy, normal thing for the President of a country of 340 million people to say,” podcaster Wajahat Ali wrote in a post .
“Biggest indictment on Michael Jordan’s legacy,” someone else added .
“Calling someone racist because you don’t like them is beyond pathetic,” another fan wrote .
Clearly, people were not happy with the president’s baseless characterization of James.
