Sci-fi has had a fair few notorious TV moments that left fans wondering what the hell they had just watched. The utterly terrible Life on Mars ending, the wacky Star Wars Holiday Special , and the entire existence of Night Man when it arrived in 1997. Doctor Who ' s 2025 finale is sadly another contender added to that list.
About 3.4 million Whovians gathered to watch the Doctor Who finale, "The Reality War," on May 31, 2025. After watching the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) regenerate into Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), the big question on everyone's lips was, "Is Billie Piper the next Doctor?" According to Piper, the answer is complicated.
Speaking at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, Piper said, "I am not the next Doctor. I am Rose Tyler in hiatus."
Piper went on to apologize for her cryptic answer, but clarified that because she is not currently filming Doctor Who as the Doctor, she can't "lie and say otherwise."
Piper admitted that she's had a "rough time of it" lately, but urges Whovians to be patient about Doctor Who's future. "It will be worth it when it comes. [Doctor Who's] been around for a very long time. It's massively successful, and impacted many people's lives positively."
Currently, there's no filming of Doctor Who , as the family-friendly space drama has been put out to competitive tender by the BBC, with its showrunner, Russell T. Davies, and production company, Bad Wolf, both making a graceful exit. For all intents and purposes, Doctor Who is canceled for the foreseeable future . While there has been a fair amount of interest from competitors around the globe, we suspect it'll be years before anything concrete about Doctor Who is confirmed.
With the show's future uncertain, Piper can't confirm what her role will be or when the series returns. Still, the actress has confirmed that, to her knowledge, Rose Tyler is not the next Doctor. How this will affect the future of Doctor Who remains to be seen—hopefully sooner rather than later.
