It's obvious that Aaron Rodgers is the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback for this season. It would make no sense for the Steelers not to start their MVP-winning quarterback.
But, it never hurts to have a great backup. That's why the Steelers' blowout loss to the New York Jets on Friday, 17-0, stings.
Steelers backup quarterback Will Howard didn't have the best game. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 74 yards but threw two unfortunate interceptions, stopping drives that really could have gone somewhere. He's holding himself accountable.
Will Howard takes responsibility after Steelers' loss
Speaking to reporters after the game, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said that even though it was a brutal loss, Pittsburgh took a step forward.
Still, Howard took responsibility. "We can't let this trip us up going forward. We have to continue to make strides. And we didn't really make any strides tonight," he said, according to ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor .
Pryor also shared on X something else Howard said after the game: "Performance wasn't up to par. ... Just the little details. ... It's a shame because those were both good drives."
He added, "I felt like we were moving the ball really well. One of the first things we talk about is protecting the football. Got to be better and learn from it."
McCarthy commented on the team's production difference from the preseason's first and second week, "If I'm looking for one clean way to explain the production of going down from eight days ago to today, the details and the execution wasn't as high."
So, it was a brutal showing. But, Howard knows he has to improve, and he seems to know how to do it. That's half the battle.
