The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers kick off the 2026 preseason with their Hall of Fame Game clash on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC, and Week 1 of the preseason officially kicks off the following week on Aug. 13.
As we count down the days until the start of the NFL regular season — which kicks off with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9 — we continue to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.
This week, we’re looking as the players most in danger of being cut during the preseason, and we’ve arrived at the Minnesota Vikings .
If the Vikings end up dealing J.J. McCarthy before the season starts like some analysts believe, then there might be a spot on the roster for Brosmer behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. But the Vikings keep telling everyone Murray hasn’t won the job yet and he and McCarthy will determine who is QB1 in camp.
If that’s truly the case, and Minnesota holds onto McCarthy, it’s hard to see Brosmer keeping a spot on the 53-man roster with the three QBs ahead of him — all of whom have starting NFL experience. But Minnesota will likely try to sneak him onto its practice squad.
Minnesota just signed former first-round safety Jamal Adams, who’s since converted to linebacker, and the team drafted Jake Golday in the second round back in April, signaling a change of direction with its linebacker corps.
Ivan Pace Jr. is still young (he’s only 25) but his production has declined each of the last two years following his breakout 102-tackle rookie season. Coupled with the fact that he’s only 5-foot-10, there may not be room for Pace Jr. with some of the bruisers the Vikings have brought in to reshape their linebacker room.
With Harrison Smith being released back in March, there is an opening in the defensive backfield opposite Josh Metellus. Tavierre Thomas has spent eight seasons in the NFL, and while he’s been solid, he’s not exactly a player coaches will stand on the table for.
Josh Metellus has one starting safety spot locked down, and Theo Jackson likely has dibs on the other. While anything can happen in training camp, Thomas, who’s 30 and much older than every other safety on Minnesota’s roster, could be the odd man out.
