Three of Bieber's walks came with the bases loaded, and it was his career-worst for walks in a start.
"I have no excuses," Bieber told reporters after the game. "I have to find a way to get out of that first inning. Dry my hands off and change shirts and eat up innings after that. That's what I was trying to do and unfortunately, I wasn't able to. I don't think I've ever had anything like that happen."
Bieber threw 42 pitches on the night. Just 15 of them were strikes.

"Kind of just the last thing we thought was going to happen with him right there," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said after the game. "When you get up to that pitch count in the first, with him, with his history and everything, just didn't want to push it."
Bieber has been limited over the past couple seasons due to elbow issues, including Tommy John Surgery.
Since getting back on the field this season, though, Bieber has been mostly sharp, until this outing.
As a veteran, Bieber will be well equipped to find a way to bounce back from this, but it's certainly a night that'll be hard to shake. It was a nightmare.
