It was their second practice in pads, and it's pretty typical for players' emotions to run high. At the end of the day, though, they are a team. These guys are brothers, and siblings can fight and reconcile with ease.
This week, wide receiver Luke McCaffrey was stopped by media members for a few questions.

"Yeah, for sure," McCaffrey replies. "We've got a lot of guys who are hungry and a lot of guys who don't like to lose. And I think when you don't like to lose, you get every single rep as a competitive rep. We talk a lot about focusing on what's happening that day, and I think we have guys that do that so well. We compete so well in the moment and let the chips fall where they may when you get out there. But I think there's no lack of going for it on our team."
You don't get to the NFL without competing, and these guys are competing at the highest level. So, yes, tempers will flare, and words will be said, but all that does is fuel the fire for the team to improve as a whole.
Another way teams improve as a whole is when their most veteran players mentor their younger players. That's what one reporter noticed with the Commanders today with Terry McLaurin, who was almost like having another coach on the field, hyping everyone up and talking to players after they make plays. McCaffrey was asked what that was like coming from such strong leadership.
"Oh my goodness, it's incredible," McCaffrey says. "He sets the tone for our room, and I think our room has fallen right into place with that. The energy, the enthusiasm, the details and focus. When you have a leader like him, who is unselfish, it really sets the tone because if he's the guy that's hyping people up, you know, how many All-Pros he's been to now? So, when you have somebody like that, you have no excuse but to be a team player, but to love and fall in love with your role."
McLaurin is also a highly competitive player and has been since his days at Ohio State. The veterans are breeding competition into the team's future, whether that looks like overcoming adversity on the field or having a guy hype you up after a great play. These players thrive on competition, and the more they compete at a high level, the better this season will be for the Commanders.
