See the full story · 2 sourcesWashington Commanders general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn met with the media on Tuesday ahead of training camp. You just knew, at some point, the topic of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk would come up.
It did, sort of.
Aiyuk, who is currently on the 49ers' reserve/left squad list, wants out. San Francisco wants him gone, too. However, Aiyuk has yet to apply for reinstatement with the NFL, nor has he reported to the 49ers. Both actions are necessary if he wants to continue his career. Aiyuk has repeatedly criticized the 49ers and made it known he wants to sign with the Commanders and reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels and Peters.
On Tuesday, JP Finlay of 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., indirectly asked Peters if a player's social media behavior would impact his evaluation of them.
"That's a good roundabout question," Peters responded with a laugh.
"I mean, we look at everything, JP. I mean, it's a great question, but we do look at everything and, you know, we want to make sure it's the right player to be in our locker room, in our bloodstream, and in our culture. And we often look at that stuff. It's not always the first thing we look at. Obviously, you're looking at the tape, and you talk to the teams that the players have been on and how they were in the locker room, the players that have played with them, and so on and so forth to make those decisions. But, you know, that's not usually a huge part of it. Usually."
Aiyuk's social media antics have reportedly soured any potential Washington interest, according to NFL insiders Jeremy Fowler and Adam Schefter. That doesn't mean the Commanders wouldn't sign Aiyuk at some point in the future, but, even if he were available — which he isn't — there's no guarantee that Washington would be interested.

Two things stood out: locker room and culture. Ultimately, the tape matters the most, but Peters will not do anything to disrupt the locker room or culture. In most cases, what someone does on social media is not a factor, but Aiyuk has made it deeply personal with the 49ers. It's important to remember that Peters came from San Francisco and has strong relationships with head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch, two frequent targets of Aiyuk.
