Joey Cantillo was good, fanning 8 across 4 innings. Final line: 4.0 IP 4H 0ER 8K 1BB. Pitch count was a big problem for him all night. He threw 26 pitches in the 1st and 31 in his final inning. He didn’t walk as many hitters as you’d expect given the elevated pitch count, but he got into deep counts with practically every Reds hitter he faced. Nonetheless, 4 scoreless is fine.
The bullpen, too, was decent. Having to come in for 5 innings of relief, Vogt pitched Holderman (5th), Aleman (1 out in 6th), Sabrowski (2 outs in 6th), Festa, Gaddis, and Cade. As a unit, the ‘pen only surrendered one run. That came in the 6th, when Aleman hit Dane Myers and then gave up back to back singles. Sabrowski was brought on with 1st and 2nd and 1 out, and struck out both Reds he faced. The 7-8-9 of Festa-Gaddis-Smith failed to give up a hit, striking out 5 and walking 3 (1-Gaddis, 2-Smith).
The offense was interesting. After some big missed RISP opportunities earlier in the game, Bazzana broke the 0-0 tie with an RBI single with the bases loaded in the 5th. Manzardo walked on 4 pitches, Arias walked, and Bailey hit a sac fly. 4 runs in the 5th and only 1 of those scored off a hit.
After the Reds scored in the bottom of the 6th, Manzardo blasted a ball 425’ to right-center to make it 5-1. Later that inning, Kwan drove in Arias with a sac fly to make it 6-1.
That would end up being the final score, and the Ohio Cup found its way back to Cleveland.
The Guardians will head back to Cleveland this weekend for a 3-game set against the Diamondbacks.
It’ll be Bibee (3.89 ERA, 4-10) vs. Mitch Bratt (6.32 ERA, 0-1) on Friday, and they’ll have both Messick and Gavin going on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
