Brooks Koepka won’t be competing in the Rocket Classic this week after all.
Koepka withdrew from the PGA Tour event on Tuesday morning. No reason was given, and specifics surrounding his withdrawal are not yet known. Ben Silverman was then added to the field at the Detroit Golf Club in his place.
Koepka only returned to the PGA Tour this season after a stint with LIV Golf. He’s made the cut in 10 of his 15 starts this season, and his best finish came in a T9 outing at the Cognizant Classic back in March. He missed the cut at both the U.S. Open and Scottish Open, however, and went T28 at the British Open two weeks ago.
Though Koepka may be fine, and the withdrawal could have been planned, it does put him in a tough spot for the FedExCup playoffs. The Wyndham Championship next week in North Carolina will wrap up the Tour’s regular season. From there, only the top 70 in the FedExCup standings will advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Koepka, who is at No. 113 in the Official World Golf Rankings, entered this week at No. 84 in the FedExCup standings. Without the ability to earn any points this week, Koepka will have to mount a big finish next week if he’s going to make the playoffs.
Scottie Scheffler will enter the playoffs at No. 1 in the FedExCup race. He’s nearly 1,000 points ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick in second. Cameron Young, who is in third, is the only other golfer with more than 3,000 points on the season.
Koepka has won nine times in his PGA Tour career, most recently at the 2023 PGA Championship. Young is the betting favorite this week in Detroit, via BetMGM. There are several other big names competing, too, including Chris Gotterup, Xander Schauffele and last week’s winner Jackson Koivun.
