The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened training camp Wednesday without one of their most important players after All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs suffered a hamstring injury during conditioning testing.
Head coach Todd Bowles said Wirfs is considered day-to-day, though the team is still determining the severity of the injury. Wirfs did not participate in Tampa Bay’s first practice, leaving the Buccaneers to proceed cautiously with the veteran cornerstone of their offensive line.
“He tweaked [his hamstring] in the running test, so we left him inside to get treatment,” said Bowles . “Right now, I’m not sure (when he’ll return). I’ll know more today. I would hope it’s not long, but we’ll see.”
Any absence for Wirfs is undoubtedly significant. The five-time Pro Bowler remains Baker Mayfield’s premier blindside protector and one of the NFL’s elite offensive tackles. Tampa Bay already experienced life without him last season after a knee procedure forced Wirfs to miss the first three games.
There is no indication yet that the hamstring issue will threaten his availability for the regular season. Still, after injuries disrupted his 2025 campaign, the Buccaneers will prioritize getting Wirfs fully healthy rather than rushing him back during the opening weeks of camp.
