Seattle Mariners Bats Come Alive in 9-2 Win Against Philadelphia Phillies

SEATTLE — Any concerns about whether or not the Seattle Mariners would have a lingering hangover following their 19-2 loss against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday were quickly answered in the M's game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners beat the Phillies 9-2 off the back of a five-run, two-homer first-inning. The Mariners need one more win in the final two games against the visitors to give themselves two consecutive series wins against National League teams in the playoff picture.

"You forget about (losses) quickly and move on," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Monday. "These guys have been able to do it. And I think we've been tested a little bit this last week with the one-sided games. ... Each time, they've come out the next day and really gotten out on the board and ahead of the other club and put up some runs early."

Before the Mariners' bats came alive in the bottom of the first, the team started out with a marginal deficit.

In the top of the first inning, Seattle starting pitcher Logan Gilbert issued a lead-off walk to Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. After striking out shortstop Trea Turner, back-to-back singles from right fielder Bryce Harper and second baseman Luis Arraez gave the visitors the bases loaded with no outs.

Philadelphia only got one out of the situation after first baseman Alec Bohm grounded into a fielder's choice (which brought home Schwarber and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead) and Gilbert struck out third baseman Bryson Stott.

Gilbert threw 29 pitches in the first inning, but powered through and finished his outing with five strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs allowed on five hits (one homer) in five innings pitched.

Gilbert was able to outduel visiting starter Zack Wheeler, who had arguably his worst outing of the season Monday. Wheeler fanned four, walked five, threw a wild pitch and allowed eight earned runs on nine hits (four homers) in four innings pitched.

"Last game, this game, (the offense) has been helping me out a lot," Gilbert said after the game. "I appreciate it. Going against an arm like (Wheeler), that's one of the best for years when he's on. That's hard to do."

The Mariners immediately responded in the bottom of the first. Left fielder Randy Arozarena hit a lead-off walk and right fielder Dominic Canzone hit a single to set center fielder Julio Rodriguez up for a three-run homer.

Rodriguez's multi-run shot was his 20th home run of the season, which made him the first player in Seattle history to begin his career with five-straight years with 20 or more homers.

— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) August 25, 2026 Three batters later, after designated hitter Taylor Ward drew a one-out walk, Cal Raleigh joined the home run part with a two-run shot to right field to bolster the Mariners' lead to 5-1.

That homer was the first of three on the night for Raleigh, the first time he's achieved that feat in his career.

Raleigh's second homer was a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth and his third was another solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, the last of which resulted in the eventual final of 9-2.

Raleigh finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs, three homers and four RBIs.

"I think it's just having that belief," Raleigh said in a postgame interview. "You're always fine-tuning your swing, stuff like that. But at the same time, just (have) that belief in yourself and trust in what you do. Just execute when you get that pitch. ... I'm feeling better in the box. I feel like I've been seeing the ball pretty well."

— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) August 25, 2026 The only other blemish for Seattle was a solo homer surrendered to Philadelphia catcher J.T. Realmuto in the top of the second.

The Mariners continued to build their advantage after Raleigh's first homer. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to make the lead 6-2 and second baseman Cole Young hit a solo homer after Raleigh's second blast in the bottom of the fifth to bolster the team's lead to 8-2.

The trio of Seranthony Dominguez, Gabe Speier and Carlos Vargas combined for three strikeouts in four innings of work and didn't allow a hit or a free base. Dominguez pitched two inning and fanned two.

Seattle will try and clinch the series win in game two against Philadelphia at 6:40 p.m. PT on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park. George Kirby will start for the Mariners and Aaron Nola will start for the Phillies.
