Go to Another League”: John Calipari Sends Clear Message to Coaches and Players Opposing SEC’s Eligibility Rules

With the SEC taking a strict stance on eligibility for professional athletes, Arkansas head coach John Calipari sent a clear message to those who disagree with the conference’s recent moves. Calipari made it clear that anyone with an issue can head to another league instead.

The SEC passed a rule that prevents athletes who signed professional contracts from returning to college. On The Sideline with Andy Katz, Calipari said he likes what the SEC is doing and highlighted his frustration with some coaches pushing back.

“I like what the SEC is doing. If a player doesn’t like what the SEC is doing, what? Go to another league. And if a coach doesn’t like what the SEC is doing?” Calipari said .

“Go to another league, which they’re free to do,” Andy Katz said.

“Just do it. Make it hard. Do it right,” Calipari added.

Who is Opposing SEC’s Eligibility Rules?

The NCAA’s five-year eligibility rule has sparked chaos in the college landscape, with athletes who were out of eligibility under the old rules but eligible under the new rule seeking legal intervention to play another year. Amid the turmoil, the SEC stepped in to pass a rule that would prevent professional athletes from returning to college.

LSU appeared to be hit hardest by the SEC’s move, having signed several professional players to the program for a year.

LSU football coach Lane Kiffin said there were “double standards” at play.

“Over 100 athletes in multiple sports were cleared and said you could go play. That’s a court order,” Kiffin said on the Pat McAfee Show.

“If you think back on all the different court orders of great players that were granted — whether that’s Diego Pavia or, now, Trinidad [Chambliss] that were allowed to play a sixth year, we followed all court orders. I think you get into a really interesting situation as a conference if you’re now saying, ‘Well, we’re not going to follow this court order.’ These kids that a court says can go anywhere, we’re going to say, ‘No you can’t.'”

A Texas judge put the SEC’s new rule on hold on Thursday, so it remains to be seen how this pans out.
