Zinedine Zidane’s son released by La Liga 2 side shortly after making World Cup debut

French soccer icon and current national team head coach Zinedine Zidane’s son, Luca, cut ties with his home of two years, Granada, on Friday - although his time as a free agent proved brief.

The 28-year-old, who made two appearances for Real Madrid earlier in his career, has spent most of his career in La Liga 2, where he’s played for Racing Santander, Rayo Vallecano, Eibar, and most recently, Granada.

However, after making 45 appearances across the past two seasons for Los Nazaríes, Luca is now free to find a new home, after the club announced on Friday that his contract had been terminated with a year remaining.

“Granada Football Club and goalkeeper Luca Zidane have reached an agreement to terminate their contractual relationship,” a statement read.

“The French goalkeeper arrived at the club in the summer of 2024 and leaves after having played a total of 45 games between the league and Copa del Rey with the red and white jersey.

“The Club thanks Luca Zidane for his commitment shown throughout these two seasons defending the Nazari goal, and wishes him the best of luck in his next professional challenges.”

As for Luca, he took to Instagram to say goodbye to the club and its fans, stating, “Today I bid farewell to the place that has been my home for two years.

“I arrived with the goal of taking Granada back to the division the city and club deserve, but unfortunately, it was not to be.

“After two seasons—with both good moments and others not so good—I leave with a clear conscience, knowing I gave my all for this club.

“I want to acknowledge everyone who has supported me over these past two years. To the staff, management, coaching teams, teammates, and fans: thank you for helping me grow as both a player and a person.

“I hope to see Granada back in the division it deserves soon.”

This follows a memorable couple of months for Luca, who made his FIFA World Cup debut in North America, where he represented Algeria. He wound up playing three games, including their Round of 32 loss to Switzerland, conceding six goals and making eight saves in total.

But Luca’s time as a free agent didn’t last long, with the 10-time international having since officially joined fellow La Liga 2 side CD Leganés. He joins on a one-year deal with the option for a second.

The club said in an official statement, “A goalkeeper with exceptional technical skills, reflexes, and outstanding footwork, Luca has now joined [Estadio] Ontime Butarque to continue his career, in which, despite his youth, he has already amassed nearly two hundred professional appearances.”

They added that he will link up with his new side on Saturday and will be presented on Wednesday, August 12.

Having won La Liga 2 in 2024, Leganés returned to the top tier for the first time since the 2019-2020 season the following campaign, only to be immediately relegated. Last season, they finished 16th in La Liga 2, six points above the relegation zone.
