Future track stars arrive in Eugene for World U20 meet. How to watch

The World Athletics U20 Championships meet is back in Eugene for the second time in 12 years and though the gates at Hayward Field don’t open until Aug. 5, the first record of the meet has already been set.

Approximately 1,800 athletes from 147 countries are expected to compete Wednesday through Sunday, breaking the previous high of 1,558 competitors for the 2024 meet in Lima, Peru.

Among them are current Oregon track athlete Juan Gonzalez (men’s 5,000 meters), and future Ducks Jaslene Massey (women’s discus and shot put), Ellery Lincoln (women’s 1,500), Simon Rosselli (men’s discus) and Estonian heptathlete Mia Uusorg.

The 2014 U20 championships at Hayward Field featured many young athletes who have gone on to have tremendous success on the world stage, including American women’s discus star Valarie (Allman) Sion and men’s sprinter Trayvon Bromell; Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, who owns world records in the men’s 5,000 and 10,000; Ethiopian men’s distance star Yomif Kejelcha; sprinter Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain; and Croatia’s Sara Kolak, who two years after the 2014 meet would win Olympic gold in the women’s javelin.

Who are the athletes with potential to be among the next generation of break-out medalists? Here’s some to keep an eye on this week.

Tate Taylor, USA: Swept the U.S. U20 titles in the men's 100 and 200. Is the world U20 leader in the 200 with a personal record of 19.75 seconds.

Gary Card, Jamaica: Is the world U20 leader in the men's 100 with a time of 9.93 and is the only sprinter who has broken 10 seconds.

Shanoya Douglas, Jamaica: Is the world U20 leader in the women's 100 and 200 with PRs of 10.98 and 22.11, respectively.

Mia and Mariah Maxwell, USA:  The twins from Texas will be gunning for Douglas in the sprints. Mia Maxwell is No. 2 in the world in the 100 (11.08) and No. 3 in the 200 (22.49). Mariah Maxwell is No. 2 in the 200 (22.44) and No. 4 in the 100 (11.11).

Charity Cherop, Uganda: She is the favorite in the women's 3,000 and 5,000. Cherop is the world U20 leader by 10 seconds in the 5,000 (14:39.38) and is nearly 20 seconds ahead of the third fastest time.

Jayden Deleon, USA: He is the world U20 leader in the men’s 400 with a time of 44.52.

Quincy Wilson, USA : The 2024 Paris Olympian won gold in the men's 4x400 relay and has a 400 PR of 44.10.

Haregeweyni Kalayu, Ethiopia: She is the only runner under 4 minutes in the women’s 1,500 with a PR of 3:59.28.

Le’Ezrea Brown and Zacchaeus Brocks, USA: The pair ran 12.95 and 12.98, respectively to finish 1-2 in the men's 110 hurdles at the USATF U20 meet in June. They’re the only two under 13.0 this season.

Shahnavaz Khan, India: He’s the world U20 leader in the men’s long jump with a PR of 27 feet, 2¾ inches (8.30 meters).

Jessica Oji, Nigeria: The all-American women’s shot putter from Penn finished fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. Her PR of 60-8½ (18.50) is the world U20 leader by nearly 2½ feet.

Emmanuel Kiprono, Kenya: The world U20 leader in the men’s 3,000 has a PR of 7:35.40 – more than 11-seconds faster than anyone else.

Sunday: 12-3 p.m.
