After finally achieving his dream of helping the New York Knicks win an NBA championship, Patrick Ewing is set to leave the franchise to resume his coaching career.
While Ewing never managed to win an NBA championship, he was part of the New York Knicks organization during their 2026 run to the title as a team ambassador.
But now, with an opportunity to resume his coaching career with a role on the Washington Wizards, Ewing has decided to walk away from the team.

Patrick Ewing pens touching letter to New York Knicks and the fanbase
In a post on his social media accounts , New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing shared a letter addressed to the New York Knicks organization and fanbase.
He thanked everyone involved in the success of their 2026 NBA championship run, and thanked the fanbase for always supporting him since he joined the team in 1985.
“To Mr. Dolan, Leon Rose, William Wesley, the coaches, the players, the front office, and especially the greatest fans in basketball – thank you.
“Coming back to the Knicks was an incredible honour, and a dream come true. Being part of this organization again, celebrating our championship and sharing those unforgettable moments with the Knicks and the fans meant the world to me.
“New York has always been home. From the day I was drafted to seeing my jersey in the rafters at Madison Square Garden, to seeing the celebration after winning the NBA championship. This city has given me memories that will be with me forever.
“Thank you again to Mr. Dolan, the entire Knicks organization, my former teammates, and every fan who has supported me through every stage of my journey. Your love and loyalty have meant everything to me. I’ll always be a New Yorker, and I’ll always be a Knick.”
Patrick Ewing trying to make the most of new NBA coaching opportunity
Patrick Ewing is returning to the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach this year, marking his first NBA coaching job since he left the Charlotte Hornets in 2017.
Ewing first joined the Wizards after retiring from the NBA in 2002. Ewing’s ties with Michael Jordan, who was an executive and a player for the team, allowed him to get a role.
He then left to join the Houston Rockets coaching staff, where he served as an assistant coach for four years.
But perhaps his most successful tenure came as an assistant coach for Stan Van Gundy at the Orlando Magic, where he helped lead the team to the 2009 NBA Finals.
When Gundy’s tenure with the team ended, he then joined the Charlotte Bobcats and stayed with the team from 2013 to 2017.
Following this, Ewing got his first role as a head coach for Georgetown University, where he only managed to lead the team to one NCAA March Madness tournament in 2021.
After six years at Georgetown, Ewing left the team in 2023 and stayed away from coaching until he was approached by the Washington Wizards again.
