On the night of July 27, 2026, authorities arrested Smith in Sarpy County, Nebraska, and booked him on felony charges related to domestic violence causing serious bodily injury, making terroristic threats, and false imprisonment.

Smith appeared for a bond hearing on July 29, where additional details surrounding his arrest were made public. SB Nation’s MMA Fighting reported the statement presented by the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office.

Sylvanie-Imagn Images “During today’s bond hearing, a prosecutor from the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office offered the following information: It is alleged that on July 26, 2026, the defendant was involved in an altercation with his wife at a bar in Gretna, Neb., during which he reportedly threatened to kill her if she did not get into his vehicle and go home with him,” Damon Martin reported.
“At one point, during the drive, she was able to exit the vehicle. The defendant allegedly continued making threats, demanding that she get back inside the vehicle. After arriving home, she again exited the vehicle. Investigators allege that the defendant attempted multiple times to use the vehicle to strike her. The defendant’s wife was able to get out of the way and avoid any physical harm.”

Smith faces three felony charges
Smith now faces three felony charges: attempted first-degree domestic assault, terroristic threats, and first-degree false imprisonment.

He is currently scheduled to return to court on August 17, according to multiple reports. Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Smith most recently competed on April 26, 2025, when he suffered a first-round loss to Zhang Mingyang in Kansas City.
A veteran of the sport since making his professional debut in 2008, Smith owns a career record of 39-22.
