Mays, who starred at Knoxville Catholic in high school, started 27 games for the Carolina Panthers over the past four seasons. The Lions signed him as a key free agent pickup over the offseason to start at center. He took virtually all the first-team reps this summer.
But Mays will likely begin the season on injured reserve. NFL Network reported he'll miss roughly eight to 10 weeks , but coach Dan Campbell declined to put a timeline on his absence.
"This’ll be a while," Campbell said. "I’m not going to give you a timeline. He’ll be ready for the playoffs, I do feel good about that."
Mays was a standout for two SEC programs. He played 42 games with 35 starts at Georgia (2018-19) and Tennessee (2020-21) after a decorated high school career as a five-star prospect out of Catholic.
In 2021, Mays was an All-SEC selection for the Vols despite missing three games due to injuries. He was drafted by the Panthers in the sixth round, and he developed into a dependable NFL offensive lineman.
Mays is the son of Kevin Mays, an All-SEC offensive lineman for Tennessee in the 1990s. And his younger brother, Cooper Mays, was UT's first finalist for the Rimington Trophy in 2024, given annually to the top center in college football.
